"When I've painted there in late autumn I have been so turned on by the warm earth colours, with the tones of the receding hills modified by the mists. Sometimes the vine leaves are set against the sky in dark silhouette but often the light glows through them giving rich, luminous tones of gold and red."

"The beauty of the landscape is so spectacular, particularly when the distances are shrouded in mists, with layer after layer of tonal change. Sensibly the Italians built their villages, with villas, castles and churches, on the tops of hills and in silhouette these are quite breathtaking."
