The Southern Hemisphere

The Southern Hemisphere

As the Prince of Wales ‘Tour Artist’ the place that most inspired me was the albatross colony at Taiaroa Head on New Zealand’s South Island. I painted these graceful birds gliding along the cliff edge, as they rode the thermals. I also captured on canvas, the swirling seas below, with the long fronds of seaweed caught in the rhythms of the waves.

In Fiji I was privileged to have a driver who took me to remote mountain villages, where I met his family and all the villagers. Then a storm blew up, thunder rumbled, lightening streaked the sky and I sheltered with the family. When the storm clouds broke, brilliant sunlight streaked across the mountains and I was able to capture that moment in both drawings and paintings.
